I just need a simple-to-use, reasonably priced service where I paste in text and it gives me back a downloadable audio file. This seems harder than expected to find!

That's a great idea! In principle, I am in favour, although there are only so many hours in the day....
Actually I've read that text-to-voice software is improving rapidly and some "robo-narrators" are apparently hard to distinguish from humans.
